Grace Model 101
Just traded a pair of Mackie HR 624s for a Grace Audio Model 101 microphone preamp. So far I have tried it out on acoustic guitar, an 80s era Fender Jazz bass, and some hand percussion courtesy of El John. The unit has loads of headroom, and a different kind of high end transparency that I've been missing with my other front end pieced (Toft, RNP). I would describe it as kind of jangly or punchy, in a good way. Nice piece of work by Grace!

Migrant Labs Robot
As anticipated, The Very Best was true to their namesake at this year's ACL festival. Had a blast watching their set. In other news, check out our latest creation: a slew of guitar pedals patched into a TRS 1/4 inch patchbay. We can use them as inserts off of the Toft mixing board, send/return FX off of our master bay, or in series on our front end. (Click to view picture). |

Line 6 M9 and Ableton Live Synced Looping
My band, Alpha Rev has been experimenting with live looping. We have got a pair of M9s both midi synced to my Ableton Live rig. We occasionally drop some drum loops during our set, and thought it would be cool to rig up the M9 Loopers to capture and playback loops. Since the M9 looper can receive midi control change messages to activate and control the loopers, we can sequence the record and play commands to our Ableton sequencer so that all of our loops (from my cello and our violin player's M9s) are perfectly in sync with whatever drum loop or programming that we've got going on in ableton. Here's a cap of the programming I put together in ableton, you'll see the CC messages in midi clips, and the launch quantization set to 1 bar. Then the commands get sent as clips in the session view.

Line 6 M9 pedal repair
Both my bandmate and I ran into this with our road-weary M9s:The display went blank, and all of the buttons stopped working. When we would depress a switch they would sometimes all go black, or turn purple without doing anything. I tried a firmware update, which solved the switch problem, but not the display. So I opened it up and noticed that this ribbon had come slightly loose. I pushed it back in (I may wind up glueing it before the next tour). Problem solved. Anybody else run into this?

Its A Big World
Pope John Paul once said that of all unimportant things, football is the most important. The World Cup is here this summer and a tour around the world is in order. During this tour it might dawn on you that there are groups that make music from other cultures. Its like nothing you've heard before. One of these groups is The Very Best, who will be peeking their heads in at Austin City Limits Music Festival it turns out. all the f ing way from Malawi.
Everyone can dance there. Or that is what I am deducing after learning that was the country of origin for The Very Best.
The track Julia is a simple hip hop tune that is an ode to some girl named Julia. I made that up because I don't know the words. But I don't have to. Dancing is much more important. |

Little Big Man
Migrant Labs built this computer for live performance. Consists of a Mac mini rackmounted inside of a Gator Studio-4-Go case. Interface is a Presonus Firepod, and the whole thing can break down to a suitcase sized rolling rack. Runs Ableton or Reason or Reaktor or whatever else you can think to incorporate into your live set. Check it!

Dont You Forget About Me
Alpha Rev was recently the featured band on ABC Family's show Greek. The episode was a tribute to the late John Hughes, so we covered Don't You Forget About Me by the Simple Minds. If you saw the episode and have sharp eyes, you may have seen my ugly mug for a few minutes. Migrant Labs was asked to track a version of the Simple Minds tune, which we happily obliged! Derek Dunivan on guitar, Alex Dunlap on bass, yours truly on cello, Brian Batch on violin, and the honorable Dwight Baker on drums. Dwight tracked drums, mixed the track, and worked some serious magic at his world class joint, Matchbox Studios in Austin. You can visit his page at http://www.matchbox-studios.com. Enjoy!

Remixing The Soldier Thread
Every now and then something falls into our laps that makes us pause for a moment and be thankful. We had the opportunity to remix a track called So In Love from group The Soldier Thread, off of their album Shapes.
The Soldier Thread is an Austin based rock band that mixes up the sonic beatdown of My Bloody Valentine with the sensitivity of Sigur Ros in a delicious, melodic stew of pop hooks. Our friend John Nelson (El John) of Thievery Corporation came in and played some ridiculous hand percussion.
It was by far the coolest session I have recorded ever. His stuff can be found at www.eljohn.com. Bassist Alex Dunlap and drummers Tommy Roalson of Alpha Rev also helped kick out the jam, with some extra drum sauce provided by Michael Christmas.
Listen to the Soldier Thread at http://www.myspace.com/thesoldierthread. Enjoy. |

Red Jumpsuit with Two Braids in My Hair
Holy shit I had almost forgotten how epic this song is. Produced by the good Doctor. Features epic green screen work by Snoop Dog, the historic Compton lead synth sound, and a sick choir sample. Not to mention some thug shit.

Drum Sequences
So this tune, and the rest of his tunes for that matter, created by Jimmy LaValle of The Album Leaf coouuulld be accused of pandering to teens who settle for easy listening music in their suburban homes.I coouuulld be accused of being one of those kids. I also possess a funny background in getting my childhood musical influences from the original Pure Moods compilation and the Weather Channel, so I'm a sucker for it. But the reason his material holds water is that (besides his excellent motifs in the Rhodes/Wurli dept.) he is one hell of a drum sequencer and gets great sounds from things that are obviously digital samples and weaves them flawlessly with actual drum recordings. Brenniven by The Album Leaf is an inspirational example of this technique, and makes for a great 5 day forecast with a 100 percent chance of relaxation.
